Hi all,
I have recently been playing Diablo 1 with my girl. The laptop was running Win7 64bit and the rig was running Win8.1 64bit. We got the game to work with 1.09 patch and all. We played a whole lot but then this weekend Windows 10 came and the laptop got its upgrade to Win10.
Now I held back on the upgrade from Win8.1 for now and it was a good idea. Diablo 1 absolutely refuses to play on Win10. It plays the videos and then when the menu is supposed to come up it states Diablo has stopped working. After playing with all the settings I decided to reinstall.
When reinstalling I get the following error message:
Setup was unable to copy the following file: SetupDatDiabUnin.exe
Error 0x00000005: Access is denied.
(C:SrcD1DiabloInstSourceDiskUndo.cpp:240)
Installation aborted.

There after Windows deletes everything it had installed and now im stuck. I'm thinking this is probably the same error that happens when it tries to go into the Menu.
Any ideas?

Seems to work fine if you're using an NVidia GPU with the appropriate driers installed (just tried it to be sure). I do know StarCraft (1) had some issues on my tablet before the Intel drivers were installed but it was peachy after that.
It could be worth trying Dege's dgVoodoo2 (currently v2.45). I realise the title mentions 'Voodoo' but it also includes a DX1-7 wrapper.
Though either of those things would require you to have it installed. You may need to run it as administrator (or perhaps even a compatibility mode) to get it to work correctly, depending on where you're trying to install it to.
Hi Thalyn,
I tried using both the old and new wrapper for Diablo but seems like this isn't a issue on the Direct3D side of things as it still crashes.
I have however got it right to install again with all the patches by running it in administrator mode. So now we have to seek other avenues.
Mods could you please post/move this too Technical Support?

Wish I could offer more assistance on the matter, but I'm not having trouble so won't be of much help. I even double-checked it on the tablet, just running natively with the on-die HD4400, and it worked (well, worked to the point where it asked me to insert the CD - which isn't easy on a device lacking an optical drive).
There doesn't seem to be anything on the 'Classic Games Support' forum, either. But someone over there might have a few more, better ideas: http://us.battle.net/en/forum/12790219/
*ed:FWIW, I did manage to fix a long-standing network issue I've been having as a result of trying this out. So at least some good has come of this thread, even if not the right good (or for the right person).

Many of us are enjoying the recent release of Diablo III but some of us still love to play Diablo II Lord of Destruction, and with Windows 8, that can be a little problematic.

Diablo II Lord of Destruction is an outstanding game that became an instant classic when it was released on June 29th in North America. Even over a decade later, Diablo fans still play Diablo II LOD on Battle.net and in single player mode. However, the operating systems we use have changed quite dramatically over the years and with each new version usually comes a new set of problems for gamers who enjoy playing classic titles.

If you have attempted to play Diablo II LOD on Windows 8 you will notice many issues, including some serious lag. Here are a few steps you can take to make sure your Diablo II LOD experience in Windows 8 is just as good, if not better, than it was back in 2001.

This quick “how to” assumes that you have already installed and patched the latest version of Diablo II LOD on your system. If you need patch information you can obtain it through Blizzard’s official patch site.

Before launching the game, right click on the game’s shortcut and select “Properties”, then select the “Compatibility” tab.

Once on the Compatibility tab, select the following options:

  • Check “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and set the value to “Windows XP SP 2/3”
  • Check “Reduced Color Mode” and set to “16-bit (65536) Color”
  • Check “Disable display scaling on high DPI settings”
  • Optional “Run this program as administrator”

Once you dial in these settings click Apply and then OK.

The next step is crucial if you want to reduce or eliminate all of the glitching and lagging that is known to plague Diablo II LOD on Windows 8.

Obtain an 3DFX Glide Wrapper, this is a little application that will allow you to use the Glide interface with Diablo II LOD. I have found that GLIDE3-to-OpenGL Wrapper by Sven Labusch seems to work the best out of any I have tried so far.

Download the files from Sven’s site and read the “ReadMe.txt” file. This will contain the most current instructions for installing and setting up the wrapper. Be sure to re-run the video test after the wrapper is installed and set it to use Glide.

** Note: You Will Also Need to apply compatibility settings to run the Diablo II Video Test (D2VidTst.exe) * *

That’s it! Hopefully you will be successful in your attempts to get Diablo running smooth. Just follow the directions closely and have fun!
